Patterns of Area
Patterns of area in East Java include housing areas, rice field areas, plantation areas, forest areas, fishery areas, animal husbandry areas, and others.
# Housing Area
Housing area in East Java is in the forms of big cities, moderate cities, small cities, and village housing. The village housing has a main area which is relatiuely big and looks like a city but is spread across rural areas, suburban areas or within agricultural areas. Geographical distribution of the housing is influenced by the economic value of either the road facilies or other transportation facilities.
# Rice field (sawah) and non-irrigated field (tegalan) area
The patterns of distribution for the rice field and the tegalan areas tend to follow the system of DAS. The tegalan area is characteristic of the highland region, the problem is not merely the irrigation network. In addition, the tegalan area offers a large contribution to the supply of other agricultural products besides rice.
# Plantation Area
It is difficult to state whether or not an area is a plantation for two reasons:
- There are types of seasonal plants and annual plants; and the total area for each is not
consistent. Much depends on the marketing pattern.
- Not all of the plantation area is specifically managed--that is, the plants also grow in dry fields.
# Forest Area
According to the utilization pattern of forest area in East Java, there are various kinds of forests, such as: nature reserve, recreational forest, pre-national park, national park, protected forest, replanted forest (reforestation), plantation forest and productive forest. The production value of forests in East Java has become one of the non-oil and non-gas commodities which has to be increased. This is to be carried out without destroying the function of a forest i.e. to protect water, land, and soil fertility.
# Fishery Area
The fishery area in East Java includes both inland fishery and sea fishery. The inland fishery is remarkably good, in the forms of: fish pond, pool, pool field, the mina padi (fishery in the rice field) the keramba (fishery in the river), etc. In the meantime, the sea fishery with total area or 110,000 sq. km has regional potential which can be used to maintain the growth of sea fishery.
# Animal Husbandry Area
As one of the most productive livestock areas in Indonesia, East Java supplies 40% of the national production of animal husbandry. Besides animal husbandry, East Java is a region which also produces cattle seedlings for the whole of Indonesia. The main production in this sector includes meat, eggs, milk; whereas the items exported are leather, bones, and duck's feathers.
# Other Areas
Included in the other areas are mining sections such as sand site areas which are located near a river. Examples of these are at the rivers Lesti, Brantas, and so on. Areas which specifically function as electric plants area are: Reservoir of Sutami, Paiton, Sengguruh, etc. The total areas are relatively small, but they provide a big contribution to development.
